What is Metatarsalgia?
Metatarsalgia is pain on the ball of the foot or in the area between the arch and the toes. The pain usually centers on one or more of the five metatarsal bones in this mid-portion of the foot. It is also known as dropped metatarsal head or dropped metatarsal arch.
Causes
Metatarsalgia can be caused by abnormal weight distribution due to over pronation or rigid high arched feet. It can also be caused by arthritis, footwear (rigid-soled shoes) foot injury (repetitive stress, sports or car accident).
Symptoms
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of Metatarsalgia is made by reproducing the symptoms as well as complete history and examination of your foot by your foot doctor. You may also require x-rays to further evaluate your foot for possible stress fracture or arthritis.
