A bunion is a bump on the side of the big toe. It is also known as hallux valgus or hallux abducto valgus. It is a progressive disorder that causes changes in the boney framework of the foot which can cause arthritis, pain and difficulty fitting into shoes. Bunions can be asymptomatic.

 

Causes

Number one reason for bunions is genetic predisposition from parents as well as increase susceptibility based on the foot type, structural changes to the foot type. Other causes include ill-fitting or improper shoes along with trauma.

Symptoms

  • Pain
  • Possible numbness
  • A burning sensation and or numbness
  • Having trouble fitting into shoes
  • Inflammation and redness

Diagnosis

Bunions are easily diagnosed but your foot doctor will take a thorough history of your symptoms along with examination of your foot. You may require x-rays to determine the degree of the deformity and assess the changes that have occurred. This will help determine an appropriate treatment plan.
