Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis)

What is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot also known as tinea pedis, is a skin infection caused by fungus. It usually occurs between the toes but it can occur on the bottom and sides of the feet.

Causes

Fungus commonly attacks the feet because it thrives in a dark, moist, warm environment such as a shoe. Fungus thrives in damp areas such as swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms. Athletes commonly have sweaty feet and use the facilities where fungus is commonly found, thus the term athletes foot.

Symptoms

Include dry itchy skin, scaling, inflammation, and in advance cases can causes cracks, blisters on and between the toes. The fungus can spread to other parts of the foot including toenails.

Diagnosis

It is very easy to make diagnosis of Athlete’s foot given the appearance appearance and symptoms of Athlete’s foot. Your podiatrist will perform a thorough history and physical to rule out any other possible conditions that can mimic the appearance of this condition.
